Transfer Credit Application

Procedure for Requesting Transfer Credit for the History Major

  1. History Majors may only petition for a total of TWO to THREE courses outside of the department of History for transfer credit petition. This form is for History Major Credits ONLY.
    • Students may request up to two transfer credits if studying abroad for one semester, or transferring to Cornell from another institution as a sophomore.  Students may request up to three transfer credits if studying abroad for a full year, or transferring to Cornell from another institution as a junior.  Additionally, students may request up to three transfer credits if they are both a transfer student and also studied abroad for a semester.
  2. Compile a folder for each course for which you are requesting credit.  Please include:
    • The History Department’s Transfer Credit Form.
    • The form from either the Registrar or from Cornell Abroad requiring the Director of Undergraduate Studies signature.
    • A transcript or grade sheet, highlighting the courses for which you are requesting credit.
    • The syllabus for the course.  (This is essential.)  If the instructor distributed only a bibliography, compose a brief (2-3 sentence) description of the course structure, requirements, and grading.
    • Include one written assignment.  If the instructor did not return the work, or if oral exams comprised a significant portion of the grade, include a brief description (2-3 sentences) of the work you completed, but are unable to include in the folder.
  3. Please include all supporting materials in this webform, and submit.  You will hear back from the department once your application has been approved.  If you have any questions, please email the Undergraduate Coordinator at jly5@cornell.edu.

Course Information: This form is for History Major Credit ONLY. 

  • Limited to Two or Three courses (see above for details). 
  • For each course being considered, please include the following:
    • university name
    • course number
    • credits
    • course title
    • grade

Please also indicate the type of transfer credit you are requesting, as well as what requirements each course will fulfill.

Values used:

  • Credit from Abroad
  • Credit from other U.S. Institution
  • Pre-1800
  • Non-US (or if graduating in 2022 and beyond, choose one: HPE, HNA, HAN, HEU, HGS, or HTR)
  • Meets lower-level seminar requirements

Supplemental Documents

Please use the link below to upload the course syllabus and coursework sample (paper and/or written exams, or description of oral exam if completed work not available), for each course being considered for transfer credit.

Please also remember to upload the Transfer Credit Form required from the College or Study Abroad Offices.  We will notify you when all materials have been review, approved, and the forms are signed. You may then stop by the main office (450 McGraw Hall) to pick this form up and deliver to the appropriate office.

Be sure the files you upload contain your full name and "Course 1/2/3 syllabus" or  "Course 1/2/3 work sample" in the filename.
