This course offers an introduction to the history of the Roman empire, from the prehistoric settlements on the site of Rome in the mid-eighth century BCE to the fall of the Western empire in the fifth century CE and its revival in the East with Byzantium. On Mondays and Wednesday, lectures will focus on major questions, including: empire building, cultural unity and diversity, religious transformations, changing relations between state and society. On Fridays, students will engage with important texts and documents.
