Alexander the Great’s conquest of the Persian empire in 330 BCE changed the ancient world forever, expanding the Greek world beyond the Mediterranean as far as India. In this course we will look at the history of the Hellenistic period. It was a time of intense intercultural contact, increasing trade across long distances, and the creation of large Greek kingdoms in a world previously dominated by city-states. We will also look at the methodological challenges of studying a period without a unified narrative history, exploring how papyri, inscriptions, archaeology and coins can contribute to our understanding of the Hellenistic period.
